Endodontics is the branch of dentistry with role in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the dental pulp. Root canal treatment is necessary when the dental pulp is inflamed or dies. This procedure is necessary to prevent the spread of the infection to the surrounding tissues having the role of supporting the tooth (bone, dentoalveolar ligament). Root canal treatment involves removing the pulp tissue totally from the root canal and the obturation (filling) of the canal with specific materials.
Endodontic procedures involve:
- pulpectomy, canal obturation
- endodontic surgery: periapical curettage, apicoectomy,
- endodontic retreatment
- Apexification / recalcification
